PTFE: 3 essential tips for machining.

PTFE can be machined to extremely close tolerances but comes with a few nuances you should be aware of. Here are three tips for machining PTFE:

  • When holding PTFE sheet, rod or tube in place for machining, make sure the holding jig or fixture distributes forces evenly. PTFE is soft and vulnerable to deformation under the strong force of a vice grip.

  • While non-cooled high-speed steel drill bits and router bits may work for virgin and unfilled PTFE, filled PTFE grades generally require carbide tooling. PTFE also responds well to coolants due to high moisture and chemical resistance.

  • When drilling, use a high feed rate and consider using air to blow away chips. Leave plenty of room for chips to eject. Interstate Plastics recommends Onsrud HHS High-Speed Drill Bits, available online or over the phone.

Twinwall: Tips for Edge Profiles

Interstate Plastics offers no-melt saw blades that work especially well when cutting twinwall profiles down to match the width of sheets to which they will be attached. Follow these simple tips when preparing your edge profiles.
  • Use an aluminum edge profiles to protect the lower edge of the sheets. For the protection of the upper edges, polycarbonate edge profiles can be used.

  • Use a metal saw to cut the aluminum edge profiles into pieces matching the width of sheets to which they will be attached.

  • Drill drainage channels to allow for the flow of condensed water along the profiles used for the bottom section of the building’s roof.

  • Attach the edge profile to the sheet with the short side on top of the sheet.

3 Tips for Multiwall Roof Structures

The roof of a polycarbonate twinwall or multiwall structure many times takes the brunt of the abuse. Here are three twinwall tips for a strong, safe roof.

A supporting structure must have a minimum roof slope ratio of 1:12, or ~5 degrees.  (however, we recommend a minimum of 10 degrees) to allow water to effectively flow over the sheet or through the flutes.

A 1:12 slope ratio means 1" of rise for ever 12" of run.

Plan arches within the cold-bending capabilities of your multiwall sheet. For proper cold bending, arches should always be formed parallel to the sheet ribs and the sheet length must be longer than sheet width.

Check roofing dimensions on-site. Complete all metalwork and painting before unmasking multiwall sheets, or before any sheet installation work.

Planning a Multiwall Supporting Structure

When planning a polycarbonate twinwall or multiwall supporting structure, we have a few important tips to keep in mind.

Supporting beams for polycarbonate multiwall structures must be at least 30mm (1.18") wide to ensure good anchorage of sheets and fastening accessories. In the case of an arched structure, check the smallest permissible cold bending radius according to the sheets' thickness.

Your polycarbonate twinwall sheets should be installed with the ribs parallel to rain flow, allowing water to flow throw the flutes if needed. A supporting structure must have a roof slope of at least 10 degrees.

In gable and wall applications, always ensure that the ribs are positioned vertically.

Complete all the metalwork and painting before beginning sheet installation work. Check the dimensions on site, and plan the roofing requirements before beginning installation.

Storing Your Twinwall Sheet

When you keep polycarbonate twinwall and multiwall sheets on hand, it's important to store them properly. This will prevent UV damage, scratches, and deformation. Here is a quick guide.

Twinwall sheets should be stored in dry, dark and well-ventilated areas, with no exposure to sunlight, wind, dirt or hard objects to prevent damage.

Store sheets on a flat clean raised surface and place them on a soft material, like cardboard, to prevent damage. Sloped stacking is recommended and if stacked flat, a stack should be kept at a maximum height of 3 feet.

Outdoors, sheets should be covered with an opaque material (cardboard, wood, EPDM sheet etc.) that provides protection from the sun. For long term storage, do not store sheets under a PVC sheet or tarpaulin.

To ensure twinwall is delivered damage free, Interstate Plastics ship on an extra protective plywood pallet at $15 for every linear foot.

Twinwall's Greenhouse Light Diffusion & Privacy Advantage

Did you know your twinwall bends light to your advantage? Especially when it comes to greenhouse applications.

Polycarbonate twinwall panels diffuse light evenly throughout greenhouses eliminating "hot spots" and shadows. A slight decrease in light transmission (versus glass) helps to keep your greenhouse from getting too hot during warm weather and keep your plants from burning.

Diffusing light is critical for optimal plant growth because diffused light bends around corners and allows light to reach the entirety of plants, as opposed to just the tops.

Twinwall in Real Life: Data Centers and Containment Systems

Data centers play a pivotal role in modern technologies that we all enjoy, especially those technologies which rely on cloud computing. "The cloud" may conjure up many different images based on your understanding of what the cloud is. Many see it as a metaphor, not a physical object. The reality is that these metaphorical clouds are indeed physical objects; rooms full of computer servers and battery racks placed inside containment systems (many times referred to as isolated hot aisles and cold aisles).

Large companies including Google, Amazon and Home Shopping Network have found that utilizing polycarbonate twinwall and polycarbonate multiwall in these containment systems provides the most reliable IT environments, allowing for maximum "uptime" as well as maximum cooling for servers and batteries alike, as well as physically separating groups of servers or batteries from each other.

The physical isolation of these servers, batteries and other systems provide many benefits, most notably temperature control, fire safety and contamination control.

Product Highlight: PPS

Today we'll take a quick look at an often over-looked plastic, PPS. Due to impressive strength and cost-effectiveness, PPS bridges the gap between partially crystalline materials and PEEK plastic.

Interstate Plastics chooses Quadrant's Techtron® as their PPS material of choice, which is easily machined to close tolerances. It is ideal for structural applications in corrosive environments or as a PEEK replacement at lower temperatures.

40% Glass-Reinforced  PPS is the most recognized PPS grade. It is compression molded and offers better dimensional stability and thermal performance than Techtron® PPS and maintains its strength to above 425°F (220°C).

Bearing-Grade Techtron® PPS is an internally lubricated and carbon fiber reinforced compression molded PPS offering a low coefficient of thermal expansion and uncompromised chemical resistance. It is well suited for and wear applications or when an electrically conductive material is required.

Rings made of Bearing-grade Techtron PPS eliminate galling and corrosion problems in centrifugal mining pumps, and allow closer running clearances -- reducing recirculation and increasing efficiency over materials such as bronze.

NASCAR Illustrated's Steven Levine sits down with NASCAR Next driver James Bickford to discuss his budding career post the 2015 K&N Pro Series West season. James discusses his relationship with cousin Jeff Gordon, his history with racing and his plans for next year and his momentous career.

A Lap Around the Track with NASCAR’s James Bickford: Phoenix Int'l Raceway

Tuesday, November 10th
On the night of November 10th, James Bickford landed in Phoenix, ready to finish strong in the last race of the season.

Wednesday, November 11th
James spent the entire day at tech inspection, talking over strategy and looking over the car with the Bob Bruncati team. Everything looked good as James mentally prepared for the race.

Thursday, November 12th

8:00am
James drove to the track in the Sunrise Ford Van which had made the long drive down. As practice started, James felt he was fast; his confidence rose. Then the first problem of the day: an ignition box failure.
"We were half power down the entire track" James noted, "We had to hustle to get it fixed."

In qualifying, James was in the middle of the pack to set a time. He placed a strong 3rd, but as the competition took to the track he was bumped down to 11th.

5:30pm
The race began at 5:30pm and the sun was still shining bright over the horizon. (Most of Arizona does not observe Daylight Savings Time.) Around lap 10 the drivers slowed for the first caution flag. On restart James fell quickly behind.

As additional caution flags came, each restart seemed to create more of a challenge.

"The car felt extremely loose; something wasn't right" he remarked, "it turned out that for 40 laps we were driving with a deflated right passenger side tire."

Coming out for the last 50 laps, James quickly worked his way up to 14th place. On the green flag lap he passed one car. Then, in James' signature comeback style, he was able to pass 5 cars on the white flag lap, finishing 8th for the race.

James was pleased with the finish. We asked him to reflect on this past season and to give us his thoughts moving forward.

"I like how we qualified throughout the season, I felt we were fast. Our average qualifying was around 3rd place, that's encouraging. We had about 300 laps led throughout the season which is a great accomplishment. We were unfortunately plagued with problems. We dealt with the problems as best we could, but unfortunately a few bad circumstances set us back."

James had technical difficulties in a few races throughout the season, but always bounced back, never picking up a DNF.

"There's up seasons and there's down seasons. I know next year will be an up season. I'm sad that I won't be with Bob Bruncati and the #6 car, but hopefully there will be a lot of attention around this program that we've built.  I'm excited to start focusing on next year."

On Saturday, October 17th, Interstate Plastics sponsored James Bickford took to a local track, All American Speedway in Roseville, CA. Qualifying with an impressive 3rd place, the race hit an unfortunate bump in the road that left to a major repair stop.

Friday, October 16th:
James drove down to the track in the late afternoon. The late models were out to practice, and James watched, looking for any differences between this and last year. He concluded the line was about the same. He stayed in the comfort of his own home that night, remembering that the previous year he was stuck in an uncomfortable motel.

The International Association of Plastics Distribution (IAPD) presented Interstate Plastics with a bronze award in Environmental Excellence on September 23, 2015 at the 59th Annual IAPD Convention in San Diego, California.

Awarded to a select few, the Environmental Excellence Award was established in 2008 to celebrate environmentally-conscious IAPD member organizations. Interstate Plastics was one of seven companies to receive the 2015 award, rated on excellence in recycling, conservation, community awareness and employee engagement.

In a formal announcement regarding the award presentation, Susan Avery, IAPD CEO said:

"IAPD is proud to honor the accomplishments of these seven companies with the Environmental Excellence Award. Life cycle analyses show that plastics are often the most environmentally-friendly material to use for applications, and as shown in the examples from these ... companies, the manufacturing of those plastics can also be done in an environmentally responsible manner."

Interstate Plastics Receives IAPD Award for Environmental Excellence
Interstate Plastics' recognition for environmental excellence came following a company-wide recycling effort that began in 2014 and includes recycling scraps, runoff and remnant material. Interstate Plastics Safety and Quality Manager Rich McDevitt, who has spearheaded Interstate Plastics' green initiatives, emphasized that "it is important that we recycle and reuse all materials, not just plastics ... Although sometimes challenging to implement in large settings, recycling is very rewarding."

In addition to the IAPD Environmental Excellence Award, Interstate Plastics has joined the IAPD GreenScene™ program. IAPD GreenScene™ honors all member companies that engage in environmentally-conscious practices.
